Bryce Harper and Manny Machado failed to make the NL roster after an offseason that saw both players involved in prolonged free agent courtships. Harper failed to make it as the Phillies’ lone representative. That honor went to catcher J.T. Realmuto.
Was it a combination of fans and fellow players showing residual apathy from the Harper/Machado overkill in the offseason, or slow starts by both sluggers at the plate once the season got underway?
Perhaps the biggest snub in the NL was Dodgers infielder Max Muncy who is tied for fourth in position player WAR according to BaseballReference.com. But the NL already had Josh Bell of Pittsburgh and Pete Alonso of the Mets backing up starter Freddy Freeman of Atlanta at first base. So Muncy missed out for the second straight year because of a numbers crunch.
In the AL, Boston’s Xander Bogaerts has better numbers than both teammates Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez who were voted as backups by the players. But Francisco Lindor made it as the backup shortstop after missing the first 18 games of the season on the injured list. Lindor, an All-Star Ambassador in his home park, has had a fine season, however, Bogaerts should also be in the game based on his .937 OPS and 2.7 bWAR.
